This obsession we have with perfection, you explain it perfectly (ha!). As I count down the days to my 40th birthday (7 more to go), I think a lot about these things. I find myself judging my life in a fairly negative light -- I don't have a single novel published yet, for example. I'm still a little too "fleshy." My skin is showing subtle signs of my age (gasp!). I write every day but that's still never ever enough for me. This is most definitely, as you put it, a "torturous state." What a wonderful post, yet again, Marisa.
