To leave the culture you were once moored in ,whether it be Irish or American, Rio or Bangalore, is to have to accept and reject many of the new myths of what is called culture ,in ones adopted country
Adoption is by its nature not the same as being a direct child of a lineage despite all the protests of its EXACTLY the same etc.So i can never be as .....as you want to be "irish" by the nature of Adoption
American acedemia struggle also to define what it means to be from here just as us Irish do at home and in or our adopted countries,.
The answer doesnt lie in Acedemia but in self definition and spiritual feeling .And a realisation that we dilute ourselves when tossed into a foreign soup when we entered with a strong FLAVOR WHTHER AWARE OF THAT OR NOT.
I identify PERSONAL;LY most with African Americans and native americans as an irish person in the US for 23 years gO FIGURE.

This reminds me somewhat of myself. I, too, felt (and continue to feel) a spiritual dead-ness in American culture---which precipitated my interest in Daoism, as well as an interest in Korea. You are definitely not alone in feeling an existential "lack" here, nor are you alone in your response to this lack.

There's definitely something missing here---something crucial, and those who haven't realized it already will be in for a rude surprise when it hits them.
